Fracture of 5th metatarsal
One of the most common fractures seen in the foot is fracture of 5th metatarsal. Metatarsal is the long bone on the outside of the foot that connects with the little toe. There are two types of fractures that occur in the fifth metatarsal: Avulsion fracture and Jones fracture.
Avulsion fracture is when a small piece of bone is pulled by a tendon of ligament and usually occurs with an ankle sprain. Jones fracture occurs near the mid-portion of the foot also called metaphyseal-diaphyseal junction. Fun fact: Kevin Durant missed beginning of 2014-2015 season due to Jones fracture in his foot.
Symptoms include pain and swelling on the outside of the foot, difficulty bearing weight on the foot and bruising. To arrive at a diagnosis, x-rays are ordered. Jones fracture sometimes does not show up on initial x-rays and additional imaging studies may be needed. Depending on the severity of the fracture the foot and ankle surgeon will recommend conservative vs. surgical treatment.
Conservative treatment includes rest, ice, compression and elevation. Immobilization is a must while treating any fractures as walking may cause further injury. If the fracture is displaced and unstable, surgery may be required. Therefore, if you had a recent ankle sprain and are experiencing pain out of control, do not delay treatment.
